Iâd never gotten up as easily as I had the next morning. Even after staying up way too late with my mom to watch Baggage. How they found such crazy people to air their dirty laundry on TV, I had no idea, but it made me feel way better about my past, Gassy J and all.
Still, I made sure to put on my makeup before work, carefully applying eyeliner and mascara and even some matte lipstick to make my full lips stand out. I wanted Kai to think about kissing them as much as I thought about kissing his.
âYou look nice,â Mom said on the way to our cars.
I shrugged. âThought I should start focusing more on making a good impression.â
âYouâre always beautiful, mija. With or without makeup.â
âThanks, Amá,â I said, going to my car.
This morning my cup from Seaton Bakery said Anything is possible.
The words just reminded me of Kai. Since when did possibility look like glittering black eyes and a breath-stopping smile? I knew obsessing about him wasnât productive, but each time I got him shoved out of my mind, a new thought returned. Every sip of my mocha was just another reminder of Kai and the moments weâd shared in the caves or in our secluded spot near Emerson Trails.
Each taste only made me crave more.
When we pulled into the garage, I hurriedly checked my hair and makeup and then got out of my car. Pushing the cart in with Mom was so routine by now, but my heart rate said this was anything but regular. Iâd see the guy who thought I was the sunrise. And maybe he was mine tooâtransforming my world into a new day where anything was possible.
We got to work in their laundry room, where it was clear that little laundry was actually done. The angry part of me welled up, wondering how many families could be fed for all the state-of-the-art equipment that sat in here, unused. I shoved that thought down, thinking of how Kai had helped our family. Money didnât have to mean evil. It could mean resources to actually make a difference. I had to believe Kai would use it less frivolously than his father.
We finished the laundry room and then climbed the stairs to the kitchen. As we neared the top of the stairs, we could hear Kai and his father.
Mom paused, looking to me. By their tones, it was clear they were arguing, but we were in the awkward spot of choosing to break it up or listen instead.
âIâm done discussing it,â Mr. Rush said. âWe donate nearly a quarter of our income to charity each year. Why up it?â
âBecause itâs the right thing to do,â Kai argued. âInvisible Mountains does great work in the community. You canât attend the gala without donating.â
âWe will match the donations raised and not a penny more, do you understand?â
Mom pushed through the door, and my eyes immediately fell on the stunned expressions of Kai and his father.
Kaiâs eyes lit at the sight of me, but his lips stayed in a soft smile.
